Placebo Effect As Good As Surgery
How will I know if I am hypnotized?
Everyone experiences hypnosis differently, to different depths. You will likely be fully aware of what is being said, will be able to talk and move in accordance to either hypnonotic suggestion or in response to physical need. A therapist will likely include a "test" or two during your session to help you feel confident that you are, in fact, in a trance state. We will fully discuss any questions before we begin so you have the appropriate expectation. The zombie like state portrayed by Hollywood is not accurate.
Can Hypnosis be used to control myself or others?
No. Everyone has freewill and control over their own mind. If a hypnotist were to suggest something that was not in alignment with your character, values or desires, you would be able to exit from the trance. Learning how to access and control your mind empowers you to make the changes you seek.
How do meditation and hypnosis differ?
Many people find it difficult to quiet the mind in meditation, which is often used to reach a zen state to offer the body and mind an opportunity for relaxation and perhaps guided visualization. In hypnosis for therapeutic purpose, the hypnotist will guide you to a moderately to significantly deeper state where your concentration and focus are heightened to allow you to bring about positive change.
What has scientific research about hypnosis shown?
Brain scans (EEGs) show brain wave activity in the learning area of your mind while in hypnosis. Historical note: In ancient Greece and Egypt, people would go to sleep in temples where high priests would whisper words of healing, and the people would leave feeling healed and rejuvenated.
Are there misconceptions about hypnosis?
You will not become a mindless zombie. One misconception in stage or street hypnosis is that the hypnotist controls the person’s mind and actions. In reality, the volunteer enters hypnosis and chooses whether to go along with the entertainer. Another misconception is that you lose your free will. Hilgard’s (1977) work at Stanford indicates that the hypnotized subject monitors and protects themselves from violating their ethical and moral standards. Hypnosis is a heightened state of concentration and focused attention, similar to meditation. You do not lose your personality or free will. You are always in control, able to adjust or reject any suggestion to best suit your goals and character.
Is hypnosis in opposition to my religious beliefs?
Like acupuncture, hypnosis is neither anti-religious nor pro-religious. It is merely a natural tool for self-healing. Today, most religious organizations accept the ethical use of hypnosis. Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and most Protestant Christian Churches as well as Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and others have historically used spiritual meditation or deep prayer that can emulate self-hypnosis. A professional, ethical hypnotist respects the faith of clients and will not try to inappropriately influence a person's religious beliefs.
In the Christian faith, Jesus taught followers to go within. He taught that we should help people to live life to the fullest and to relieve suffering whenever possible. Hypnosis is a natural modality and state helping people live a fuller, more abundant life and to reduce and/or eliminate pain, addictions, anxiousness, fears, phobias, addiction, anger, smoking, excess weight, etc. Hypnosis has helped millions of people to more easily reach their full potential.
What is past-life regression and how is that different from an age-regression?
At times hypnotists use what is called an age-regression, which is a technique to look back at one's current life and see where a particular issue or problem began. By understanding where problems begin we have more information about possible misperceptions and/or how to resolve the problem of today.
Past-life regression is often used for "entertainment" purposes but it is also increasingly used by many for identifying the beginning point of a particular issue or problem currently being experienced for which there is no original cause found in one's current life. Many amazing cases, with vivid details and great change of current health/issue have been expierenced through Past-life regression. With a skilled hypnotist these advanced techniques can provide useful insight.
